It is with
profound sorrow and shock that i add my few lines to those of
many fans of this Great Humble African-Mr. Joseph Hill. As one
of reggae's emperors, he has left us with memorable, uplifting,
educative and conscoius messages. He lamented in one of his songs
as follows: since brother Bob died, they say reggae music gone
down but as long as Bitter belly Joseph Hill is alive reggae
music is alive.... And he was true to every letter of the above
quote and a lot more. May the Lord guide and protect his family
to carry his legendary legacy forever. i had the chance of seeing
culture in concert twice in Detroit and it was an experience
of a life time. My condolence to the Hill Family for the loss
of this Great Man-Culture (Rasta elder). Jah Bless and may your
mighty soul rest in the good hands of Jah. A slice of mount is
truely yours. I'm still crying.

I was more than shocked when i heard the sudden death of my beloved
reggae icon. Mr Joseph Hill's voice, his lyrics and message are what
made him so great and a never-forgoten legend. His concert in my home
country(Sierra Leone), in the 1990s is a living memory to that nation.
I remember when he set up the stage with the words,"people of Sierra
Leone come forward" He is gone but will never be forgotten. Although
i am now alone in the wilderness, i never get weary yet. Sir Joe, RIP

A great man has taken time off his busy schedule. He will always be there-
to accomplish his work of giving hope to the hopeless and championing the cause
of humanity. His music was not only entertaining but also a vehicle through which
the message of social justice and equal opportunities were transported to all
of humanity. From the afflicted nations in Mother Africa to the rest of our frenetic
World the musical maestro of Joseph 'Culture' Hill will forever live... Rest
in perfect peace Brother. Tamba Jimmy

To hear the passing of my most favourite reggae artist, Joseph Hill, has greatly
saddened I-man and the rest of the I-dren here in South Africa. Jah has blessed
us with Joseph's presence down here in South Africa in December 2002. Ever since
then I & I had wished that Joseph would return one day to bless I & I once more
with his presence. May his soul find his way to The Most High and join Bob Marley,
Peter Tosh, Dennis Brown and the rest of the dearly departed I-dren. I, for one,
will greatly miss him. I-man speaks on behalf of the I-mmunity down here in South
Africa when mi say: Joseph Hill, blessings, Jah man, we give thanks to Jah for
your presence, your loving and your dancing. I & I shall always remember you.
We here in South Africa also sends our condolences to the Hill family and associates.
Blessings to I & I.

the pleasure it has brought and will continue to bring us. Some of his words
like, "Tan up and fight......with your mind...." and, "The belly of reggae is

he is. Those who have had the opportunity to see and hear this consumate performer

Joseph "Culture" Hill, was the true messenger of the Most High Jah. His lyrics
can only be equated to the lengendary Bob Marley. He has through out his career
managed to break loose both colonial and personal demons out of the hearts of
the troden. After Bob Marley, he is probably the only one musician that won the
heart and souls of Africans in Africa, thereby making himself the true messenger
of African vision in diaspora. The most Honourable Joseph "Culture Hill" is and
will remain a reggae household name across the globe in the same breath the world
holds the Father of Reggae Bob Marley. Hill stood for Love, Peace and Justice.
It is these ideals that he preached again and again and again. He lived his life
well and I have no doubt in my mind, that the Most High Jah Rastafarai I will
remember his most humble servant JOSEPH CULTURE HILL and allow his MIGHTY SOUL
to rest in PEACE. Fare thee well brother, lets meet when our work here is done

The man with the velvet voice, arguably the best vocalist of my life. It will
be difficult to come to terms with this loss. To me he was the most admired person
in my life and his talent was something out of this planet. As he put in one
of his songs "where the tree falls" when he said as long as bitter belly joseph
hill is alive reggae music is alive and now it will be the opposite. He was one
of the few musicians still repsresenting roots reggae as the arena these days
is filled with artists many of them doing commercial reggae. May his soul rest

musical beats are now the heartbeat of his soul to be forever cherished as I
will always cherish the moments of his numerous smiles. He touched us many times
with his kindness and I will forever be inspired. We wish we could be there but
in what will seem like an eternity to us but the winkin' blink of an eye to Joseph,
he will not be forgotten by many. Condolences go out to Pauline Hill, Kenyatta
Hill, the entire Hill family, and the numerous musicians who formed the backing
groups Dub

The voice of the peaple has left a big gap in the world of reggae music. But
his presence will remain and still be felt in his music which has always had
a touch on the socio-politiocal plight of the down-trodden. Joseph Hill was a
hero , sent to liberate the down trodden in the society & he was a saint & a
teacher, born to teach Jah children about the wickedness in babylon & the righteousness
in Mt. Zion. May his soul rest in peace.

work he has done with his music towards Jamaica and ReggaeMusic in general.Who
could imagine a Reggae night without his music...? Talking about respect:I and
many others do believe that he should not be buried at Dovecot, but at Mannings
Hill or at his birthplace, so the many fans have an opportunity to visit and
honour him. If the decision is made for a special purpose by the family we will
respect it, of course. We have to keep up our heritage, especially for artists
like him. Music is the food of love, Josephs music will never die... ONE LOVE

We are saddened by the news of the sudden death of the world's reggae prolific
successor brother Joseph Hills whose name and sounds can been heard in sweet
rythem in the mountaineous capital of Freetown and beyond. On behalf of the men
and women of this historic nation I want to say in Sierra Leone we feel it most
of all because we have lost a friend and brother. we are shaken with shock and
sorrow as much Sierra Leoneans do in funeral rite by tradition. The vaacum for
the lost of Sierra Loene's most admired reggae professor whose choice of words
to define man's deceit has been an ecyclopedia in the positive minset of most
youths here is too deep and wide to fill. He was with us in war, in difficulty,
in suffering and in the struggle for liberation. We therefore want to join you
all and the bereaved family in grief and sombre, we wish we have the opportunity
to be with you physically to demonstrate by mind and soul our sympathy. However,
you are not alone in this moment of sadness and loss, truly i say to you that
brother Joseph Hills has gone to set the stage for us to live in the positive.
May his glorious soul rest in humble and perfect peace. Amen!!!!

a wake up call to conciousness both spritually and phisically. You encouraged

I can interprete him (Joseph "Culture" Hill)as a Pro-Africa Son, who preach
peace, love, respect, justice and equal destribution of wealth and natural resources
to all people of the world, especially to those in African and othet third world.
I was not right emotionally, spiritually and physically when I heard about the
sad news. I would like to ask his family and friends to carry on with the clean

The death of Joseph Hill has really sadden me. He is one of few remaining
greatest reggae muscians the world has ever known. This man rallies people around
jah's throne;take people walking around mountains, for them to hear a voice of
one saying "behold I come quickly to pay every man according to the work he has
done". He was (and still is)a voice crying in the wilderness, beckoning jehovah's
children to come unto him. Hear him decrying discrimination and injustice saying "Jah
never made some from wood and stone, and the others from plastic and rubber.
From the time I was in my infancy in my native Ghana, up till the present sojourn
in the United States, I have loved Culture. I cannot count the number of his
record that I have bought so far, I literally have every single record of his.
Oh God Almighty make this servant of yours rest in perfect peace and may any
sin he may have committed here on earth be forgiven. Oh Joseph, you've gone,
but like your name sake in the old testament, we know you will go and prepare
a place for us in 'Egypt'so that when there is famine amongst us, we may have
place to migrate to, where you will administer to us some of God's blessings
that he has bestowed upon you. Ameen

Ihave been listening to the music of Culture since my early 20's, I paid much
attentin to his lyrics and, Oh, how I was and I am still inspired by the messages
in the old and new releases. When the Group performed here in St. Lucia, (twice)
people from all over the country attended; some came on horse-back, some walked
for miles. At their first show, when Joseph Hill opened the performance in the
rain with "Jah Jah See dem a Come" we went wild.....We even stood in the rain
we did not want to miss a single word not a single verse. I know that many Lucians
will join with me in celebration of his life. I shall surely miss his haunting
croon and those lyrics skilfully crafted to make man and woman "getup and do
something for our selves" and "dem Politicians Go away" lyrics which could only
be associated with Joseph Hill and Culture. And now that his spirit has flown
away "with wings of a dove, "flown to the hills to be at rest" we will always
remember him until he joins us again..... I will play his music for my grand
children and great grand children and their friends. We have moved from the "ticklish
Ghetto" but we have not embraced the "English Fireplace" because we still love
our Caribbean Land. When we leave her shores we alwasy return. My condolences
to the band family please keep the "culture going", because although the masses
have "thrown one stone", our "Payday" has not yet come and there is still "too
much pressure on de people". Much Love Ulynder St. Lucia

use of good things for the time will come when you'll not see them again".Truely
we will not see him again until the Kingdom comes. Adieu my brother and be at

Like so many others, I am in shock and deeply saddened at the sudden passing
of our brother Joseph. I immediately thought of Sister Pauline and began to pray
for JAH to give her the strength she will need to endure. I pray for the Hill
family and know that with the many memories they have to share, Natty never get
weary!! We had Culture scheduled to perform along with Luciano, here in New York
at the Hammerstein Ballroom on Saturday November 4th for the second annual Reggae
Culture Salute a celebration of 76th anniversary of the coronation of His Imperial
Majesty, Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia. We have now decided to make the
night a tribute night of CULTURE for Joseph Hill our Reggae Icon. For the many
who are unable to journey this weekend to JA to pay their final respect, please
join us as we celebrate his life, his music and his message. His son, Kenyatta
and the rest of Culture the group will be there. We are expecting others to be
a part of this celebration here in the northeast. Stay tuned and remember the
good times, listen to his inspirational message in his music and you spirit will
be lifted, I promise you will never get weary. Jah Bless Joseph, may his soul
rest in peace and may JAH shine HIS eternal light on Sister Pauline and the entire
Hill family, friends and loved ones. JAH BLESS.

It is with a heavy heart that I take the death of Joseph "Culture" Hill. As
a youth in St. Lucia the first time I heard his music I knew he was something
special and I always regarded him as a Reggae Messiah. I remembered clearly,
In 1977 I was attending University in New Jersey and on the night of 7/7/77 a
group of us gathered on campus awaiting the prediction of the clasing of the "Two
Sevens."
As a true fan of Culture, I founf Joseph Hill to be a motivational speaker, building
listeners towards the realization that each individual can make a difference
in this world. This world is like a mirror ... if you smile it will smile back
at you ("Behold"). Although I only saw him live once he will always have a lasting
impression on me. Jah Lives!!

THE MISSION OF THE LEGENDARY JOSEPH ‘CULTURE’ HILL BY ABOU BAKARR-BINNEH
KAMARA ESQ FREETOWN SIERRA LEONE WEST AFRICA INTRODUCTION The name Joseph ‘Culture’ Hill
will undoubtedly continue to linger in the hearts of every conscious member of
the human race. Even generations yet unborn will surely come to know about that
demised member of the human race. Joseph genuinely had a somewhat or rather seemingly
daunting mission to accomplish, but he chose to be undaunted. To God be the glory.
In 2003, Joseph gracefully accomplished that mission which hitherto seemed daunting
with the inauguration of his message-oriented World Peace album, which itself
was a classical manifestation of one of the fundamental reasons that resulted
in the formation of the United Nations Organisation. WHAT WAS JOSEPH’S
MISSION? Joseph was really destined to serve humanity for as long as he lived.
Indeed, he perennially served humanity with all humility. Being a humanist, he
endeavoured to meditate thoroughly, contemplate critically and inwardly analyse
the seemingly uncontrollable variables that have taken away humanity’s
happiness. As he journeyed into the Second Nature, he discovered that war, racism,
oppression, slavery, corruption, injustice, illiteracy, conspiracy, greed, selfishness,
terrorism, bigotry, religious intolerance, ignorance, blind prejudices, distrust,
cynicism, jingoistic patriotism, tribalism, regionalism, extremism and general
disrespect for the human race, are the forces that have principally thwarted
humanity’s progress, dignity and sanctity. As he journeyed further, he
found out that the above forces are the creation of unrefined members of the
human race. SOLUTIONS TO HUMANITY’S PROBLEMS Joseph suddenly set himself
the task of finding profound solutions to humanity’s numerous problems.
He knew that the task ahead was somewhat daunting because the human race is made
up of social animals subject to unpredictable tendencies. He knew there were
divine messages enshrined in sacred religious books that could serve as constant
sources of inspiration to him. He knew that it was optional for man to either
accept or reject his message. He even knew that the ‘deaf,’ the ‘dumb’ and
the ‘blind’ shall not return to the path. Joseph equipped himself
with the requisite education and honestly chose to indulge in singing songs of
human dignity, sanctity and progress. Alas! His songs are a reminder of God’s
message to mankind. They are reflective of simplicity, freedom and salvation.
They are even a synthesis of the positive and practical solutions to humanity’s
challenges. Joseph preached peace, love, harmony, justice, equality, freedom,
unity, education, tranquillity, morality, kindness, happiness, religion and universal
survival. HIS WISDOM His lyrics were historically conditioned. He understood
the trend of international law, World history, politics, sociology, economics
and globalisation. He tailored his lyrics to suit societal aspirations at any
point in time. When he started his mission, one of the very first controversial
issues which he attempted to shed light on was slavery. Africa has been a victim
of several destructive and oppressive forces. Slavery is said to be one of such
forces. Our forefathers were sold into slavery for no consideration. Joseph was
again and again asking for the consideration which Africa should get from that
inhuman and most cruel form of trade, which undermined the development of Africa’s
potential manpower resources. He sang several songs in opposition of slavery
and its repercussions for the African continent. Those songs are found in his
all-embracing ‘Culture Pay Day’, ‘Culture Two Sevens Clash’, ‘Culture
International Herb’ and ‘Culture Cumbolo’. SLAVERY In the year
2000, a conference against racism and xenophobia was held in South Africa. One
of the issues raised in that conference was the payment of compensation to Africa
for the colossal damage done to the continent as a result of the slave trade.
Regrettably, some Western countries undermined that positive move. That was why
Joseph repeated his ‘Pay Day’ message which he had preached in ‘Culture
Cumbolo’. LOOTING TREASURIES AND PLUNDERING ECONOMIES In particularly Africa,
politicians have imbibed the unrefined culture of looting treasuries and plundering
economies. Joseph designed a track (which is to be found in the album ‘Culture
Pay Day’) that specifically addresses the dubious and diabolical activities
of politicians. That track titled ‘election’ was timely and as well
educative. WAR IN SIERRA LEONE When Sierra Leone was trapped in the midst of
an internecine civil war that lasted for ten years, he dedicated a track called ‘War
in Sierra Leone’ to every Sierra Leonean. That song highlighted the magnitude
of destruction to Sierra Leone and her inhabitants. THE RWANDAN GENOCIDE In 1994,
well-over eight hundred thousand members of the human race were slaughtered in
Rwanda as a result of the negligence of the United Nations Organisation. This
inglorious incident culminated into what came to be known as the ‘Rwandan
Genocide’. The cause of that incident was not unconnected with the scourges
of tribalism. Joseph attempted to educate mankind about the dangers of tribalism
in a track called ‘Tribal War’, which is to be found in the album ‘Culture
One Stone’. YOUTHS UNEMPLOYMENT This problem is not peculiar to Africa.
In some other countries in Asia, Eastern Europe and South America, youths employment
is posing serious danger for humanity. In Sierra Leone in particular, hundreds
of thousands of youths are unemployed. They are discriminated against in employment
for reasons best known to employers. Joseph believed that youths themselves could
indulge in other economic activities that will equally serve as constant sources
of employment for them. In the album ‘Culture Good Things’, he urged
every youth man to indulge in productive activities for their survival. He repeated
this message in ‘Culture Pay Day’ and ‘Culture World Peace.’
EDUCATION There is a strong positive correlation between education and development.
A fundamental productive activity is education. Education can be academic, technical
or vocational. Those who have not been fortunate to pursue higher academic courses,
can learn other technical/vocational trades, that are equally beneficial, as
pursuing higher education. The educated or technical man gets what he eats, where
he sleeps and what he wears. He does not depend on anybody for survival; he does
not blame anyone for his misfortune; he can solve his problems with his meagre
financial resources; he hardly blames the rotten-system for his predicaments;
he hardly indulges in violent and criminal activities aimed at robbing people
off their physical possessions. On the other hand, the uneducated or non-technical
man finds it difficult to survive. He does not even know where to go for the
next bread. When he is hungry, he becomes frustrated. When he is frustrated,
he does anything to survive. In pursuit of his survival, he infringes on the
rights of other members of the society. So, if the society has hundreds of thousands
of uneducated and non-technical persons, the very survival and stability of that
society will be threatened with thuggery, theft, outrageous brutality and probably
indiscrimate killings. Joseph took the above discourse into consideration in
all his messages that revolved around education. A critically analysis of his
classical albums reveals that there is hardly an album of his that does not contain
a message about education. Most of his message on education is found in ‘Culture
One Stone’, ‘Culture Pay Day’, ‘Culture Trust Me’ and ‘Culture
World Peace. REVOLUTIONS AND REVOLUTIONARY POLITICS The dawn of independence
in Africa coincided with a period in World history that has been characterised
as the ‘Cold War’. The Cold War occasioned a philosophical and ideological
battle that saw the climax of socialism and capitalism. Socialism seemed to apply
to African countries which had suffered immensely at the hands of the colonialists
and imperialists from the capitalist West. The ideological basis of socialism
initially presupposes the liquidation of capitalist institutions and structures.
This initial phase of socialism can only be ushered in through a brutal revolution.
This ideology largely influenced African, Asian and some Eastern European countries.
Innumerable revolutions thus took place in several corners of the Globe. In Africa,
pseudo-revolutionaries came under the guise of brutal revolutions to unleash
terror on innocent and defenceless civilians. ‘Culture’s’ view
on revolutions and revolutionary politics was simple, precise ad straightforward.
He believed that revolutions could only be successful when the objective and
subjective forces of change are at equilibrium. Alas! He added a disclaimer to
this view in his famous ‘Culture Humble African’ when he said ‘if
you are ready for a revolution you should try and find the right man’.
This qualifier (disclaimer) was necessary because in Africa in general and Sierra
Leone in particular, misguided person have prophesied to launch several revolutions
that became counter-productive for even the most vulnerable. ‘Culture’s’ initial
message on revolution enshrined in his masterpiece ‘Culture Nuff Crisis’ was
taken a stage further in ‘Culture Humble African.’
APARTHEID AND RACIAL DISCRIMINATION In South Africa, an obnoxious political system
(apartheid) that discriminated against Africans in all spheres of human activity
was imposed in that country. Apartheid caused serious political unrest for South
Africa. In 1976 the notorious ‘Soweto massacre’ opened the eyes of
humankind to the plight of innocent Africans who had suffered unjustly as a result
of the terror of apartheid. In his album, ‘Culture At Work’, he denounced
Apartheid in its entirety. Culture posed a very catchy question in this way: ‘Have
you ever seen a black roses in a white garden? Culture pledged to fight, albeit
musically, for the rights of his brothers and sisters in South Africa and beyond.
He even called on them to depend on him so that he would stand for their rights.
TRUTH AND HONESTY
‘Culture Three Sides to my story’ teaches honesty and sincerity.
Culture asked us to be honest to ourselves. He made it clear that there are three
sides to any story: Your side, my side and the truth. The truth is a moral defensive
weapon. Honesty and sincerity are the hallmark of the examined and good life.
When insincerity and dishonesty are prevalent in society, society is bound to
disintegrate. It is only the truth and nothing but the truth that can salvage
society from the abyss of destruction. Neither my side nor your side could said
to be the truth; the truth is independent of either sides. LOVE If you distinguish
the light of love from the origin of life, the darkness of disappointment and
sorrow will prevail over the shadow of man’s face and the face of the World
will became gloomy. ‘Culture’ took this aphorism a stage further.
He taught that the only thing humanity needs is love. He believed that love should
even shine brighter than the morning sun; it should even shine brighter everyday.
He denounced violence and called on humanity to embrace the euphoria of love.
Humanity is today suffering immensely at the hands of criminals committing serious
crimes. A wave of hatred has superciliously swept across the Globe. Had there
been love in the hearts of human beings, the world would have moved positively
to the state which God Almighty had ordained. ‘Culture’s’ message
on love is found in his enlightening ‘Culture Baldhead Bridge,’ Culture
Harder than the Rest’, ‘Culture Nuff Crisis’ and ‘Culture
One Stone’. THEISM Islam, Christianity and Judaism are the only monotheistic
religions that recognised the Omnipotent, Omniscient and Omni
