LOVE & RESPECT SHOWN JOSEPH HILL IS A TESTAMENT TO HIS LIFE
AND WORKS Joseph Hill was truly a cultured reggae ambassador. I have been a fan of his music/lyrics since 1976 I will truly miss him performing his songs. His voice will resonate with me forever. I will cherish my collection of CULTURE conscious music. To his family and friends my deepest sympathy; Lift up you hearts and cherish his memories remember- JAH wanted him now... HE SET HIM FREE!! Bev <lgibs@comcast.net> Ft lauderdale, Florida USA - Saturday, August 26, 2006 at 23:55:19 (EDT) I have been a fan of reggae music since the late seventies. Over the years Culture became my favorite. He surely will be missed by me. Joe Hopkins Baker, La USA - Saturday, August 26, 2006 at 23:43:36 (EDT) Joseph was much loved in Chicago. Sometimes in an open air venue, and at other times in a packed, crowded confines of a club, we hailed Joseph, dancing to his music, trying to keep up with his energy. As loud as it may be, he waved us to quiet, and reasoned with us about the issues of the world and humanity. And then took us to a higher level with his all out singing and drive. I personally will miss him as a friend, as well as a fan. May his music live on, with the spirit he so envisioned. His family and fellow musicians will continue to be welcome to our city, as we continue to celebrate his life and works. JO Ann Karr <jkarr@neiu.edu> Chicago, Illinois USA - Saturday, August 26, 2006 at 23:43:12 (EDT) The news was toooo sadddd!:( I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Hill in May in New Haven at Toad's Place. My son's band open for him that night, wow it was exciting. My son has studied and admired Mr. Hill's work very deeply. He was glad and felt blessed that night when he handed Mr. Hill his first cd, and said to him " I want to Thank you for your music, you have inspired me to write and record my music." The day we got bad news we had just arrived home from the Reggae Fest in Newport, Vermont. Joseph Hill will be missed by many:( Our deepest and sincere condolences. It was November 1989 in Harare , Zimbabwe when Eric Donaldson, Ijahman, Culture and Ruffcutt Band from London England came to Zimbabwe to showcase one of the most unforgettable reggae shows since Bob Marley's Independence day jam in 1980. Personally it was my break in life. I was involved with the promotion, selling t-shirts , tickets and putting out posters when I met Joseph Hill and crew. However, with all this exposure From the Zim show I got a lot of links world wide. And thanks to Culture and Crew. Joseph we all miss you, but will never be forgotten in Zimbabwe. I was guided through my college years with the positive vibes from Culture, I have had the pleasure in meeting Mr Hill, he was humble through and through and what a sense of humour!! His songs have taught me there is always three side to a story and I not ashamed in what they want to do. He's shown me the spirtual love and guidance through decades of songs. Now I am adult with a family, I still listen to the songs and have only every missed three concerts when he has visited London. He will be missed deeply in the flesh but spirtually he lives. What stunned me was the simplicity the reggae icon carried with him. As we shook hands, I introduced myself but Jo' was too smart for the pen and the note book that were in my other hand. He asked "You reporter?' I quickly answered yes but assured him that I came to party and not to write. Again, he quikly countered and told me I was free to write because I was his "African brother." With that assurance from a larger than life reggae maestro, the night had just began. After the party, we hugged and parted, and with that, my hero was gone never to come back.Peace be with your wife and family during this dark moments in their lives. I have seen Joseph Hill and Culture perform many times in Pittsburgh and I felt honored to meet him and share conversations with him after the shows. He has touched my heart deeply. One conversation with him I told him that I have "all of Culture's CD's" in my reggae collection. Joseph smiled and starting naming several Culture CD's that I never heard of (mostly imports), I was truly blessed in February 2005 to see Joseph perform at Club Belladonna in Negril. The venue was very small - I felt as if Joseph was performing in my back yard. He was spinning his favorite records, I will never forget it - His charming smile when I showed him a picture of him from a PIitsburgh show - he gave me another charming smile. I received a call from a Jamaican accented woman from 75 miles away in Lady’s Island SC – she wanted to know who I was to be playing “her music on de radio.” “You a Jamaican? How you know ‘bout dis ya reggae – and Joseph Hill, my neighbor from back ‘den?” I explained – “I’m from Brooklyn – we got more Jamaicans there than alla Kingston!” I invited Lorna Tappa to the show – she met Joseph backstage and they had a reunion – 4real. 3-4 years later my son took her daughter to the prom … we’ve been friends since then. It was a great honor for my group, Dub Is A Weapon, to perform alongside Culture on a string of shows in Virginia a few years back. Joseph was certainly one of the most gracious musicians in the hall on those nights, more then willing to sit and chat with an up and coming musician like myself. How long are I&I going to sit down as they rob us of our Spiritual, Social & Political redeemers. "We know who we are now. It's time for JAH people to 'fight' this Armageddon" CULTURE has been my inspiration right from my teens. Got more inspirations & strength from CULTUREs' songs especially during my high school days -don't pass a day without listening to CULTURE. Since I've always siezed every opportunity, either in Ghana or in Europe to see CULTURE in concert. Icould'nt believe me eyes when I first saw Joseph 'CULTURE' Hill at London in 1992. I find myself each time at CULTUREs' concert in a different plane ( a trancedential progression). I just love to listen and move 'in the spirit' to CULTUREs' inspirational & redemption messages. It's so sudden, sad & sorrowful that Joseph 'CULTURE' Hill is no more. I rightly believe that his humble & righteous soul & spirit has been taken away from us by the Lord of Lords, King of Kings, His Imperial Majesty JAH Rastafari. Joseph is Resting In Peace at Mt. ZION - Allalujah where "there is no night there". Anyway we take consolation in hoping that he is resting in the bosom of the almighty with brother Marley. Hopefully, we shall meet again in glory. Death is inevitable and comes when it has to come. May the almighty keep the soul of brother Joseph Hill in his kingdom. I also have the hope that by the time our hour is due we shall meet him in Heaven and dance to his good and inspirational muzic. I met him in 1990 and 1991 at Graffiti in Pittsburgh, PA. He was so gracious. Since 1990 a picture taken of him and me has always had a place of honor in my home. I am devastated. I never just heard his music; I felt it! My condolences to all his family, band members and friends. He will never be gone.
