JOSEPH “CULTURE" HILL IS FLYING WITH THE ANGELS - BY LAUREN DRUMMOND

Please be still and note that he's not dead, but sleeping or there won't this discussion about Mr. AFRICAN/MR. RASTAMAN. Mr. Hill's body of work is the NATURAL LIVING WATER for all who want to drink can use everyday. He is missed only in FLESH but not in SPIRIT since COMTEMPLATION/IMAGINATION/IMAGINE will resolve that issue. ONE LOVE FOREVER!

I don't know much about Joseph Hill but I'm about to find out. What I do know is that since I've had Two Sevens Clash in my hands my life has changed for the better. Joseph's words penetrated my heart and eased my mind bringing me to the conclusion that this man is my brother. This was the most uplifting music I had ever heard. I wanted to hear more of Culture so I aquired Harder Than The Rest. The first one was no fluke. He represents everything that is right about this beautiful earth we live on. I went back to the shop today for more Culture and found a vinyl copy of Cumbolo which I quickly put in my hands. Seconds later while looking for more reggae music I heard the un-mistakable news. I realized that Jah had led me to Joseph Hill. One. Love.

In the past 10yrs, I've listened to your music & by listening to you I've learned alot. You, The Teacher, taught me about roots, spirituality, most importantly, inner peace. I wished I had gotten the chance to see you in concert back when I was home in Philly because you would always make your way there. May Jah continue to keep your love & light lit up forever.

I probably do have problems with accepting this loss ... would still like to know the real cause of death ... This is simply too sudden for my confort! I am just simply sad, very sad indeed ... I'll listen to your words, some will make me sadder still, beacuse they make even more evident the magnitude of loss, but other will sure lift me up as you most probably intended. Thank Jah for you and for sharing his blessings with the world.

Thanks for letting me share the stage with you as your Keyboardist in the late 80s and early nineties. I'm sad we've lost one of reggae's biggest vocalists and songwriters. Far away from Jamaica there are a lot of people to whom Mr Hill's sincere, humble and powerful singing brought hope and happiness. We all will remember these lyrics : "This world is like a mirror / Reflecting what you do / If your face is smiling / It’ll smile right back to you" (Behold I come quickly). Respect !

Deepest love, support and empathy to Mr Hill's family, friends, fellow musicians and fans....tears streaming down for the man's passing, I recall the many times I've witnessed Mr Hill and Culture singing and speaking their truth for all of our hearts. During the joyous Christmas season of 97-98, I had the absolute honor of seeing Culture perform on the football field of a primary school surrounded by children and other townsfolk of Treasure Beach, JA. I most recently experienced the magnificent Mr Hill at Sierra Nevada music fest here in N. California! Life is like that, how does one know it would be the last time? SO live as he did, with all of your heart, with all of your being, every moment of every day, because they all have meaning and they all do matter! On to Zion, to sit at Jah's side....playing dominoes and reasoning with Bob and Peter....love you Culture, your spirit lives on through your words and music now and forever!! Learning the news of Joseph Hill's passing brought me to tears. I have so many great memories of seeing him live but I always thought I'd get to again. I have to credit Joseph Hill for introducing me to the world of reggae beyond Bob Marley (much respect though). Working in a record store many years ago, we put on a random various artist reggae CD called 'Calling Rastafari' with the artists Culture, The Gladiators, The Mighty Diamonds, The Itals and The Wailing Souls. The CD didn't look like anything outstanding but once that first track by the same title as the album (Calling Rastafari) by Culture played, I knew it was something special. After that, an entire world of reggae opened up to me that I didn't know existed. Bob Marley had been all I'd ever been exposed to....but thanks to the distinct and profound voice of Joseph Hill, I was hooked. That CD carried me through a lot. Though I never got to hear any of those album songs live, there were many others I was blessed to hear Joseph sing. Now, I'll be putting Calling Rastafari back in the car CD player so that it can be in the rotation (in memory of) for a long, long time. R.I.P. Joseph...forward on to Zion...

Many sorrows got out today. I had the pleasure of producing and directing the Culture show 3 or 4 times over the last couple years. Last year at EarthDance International, we did a live web stream of the show. I invited Joseph to our production trailer to dictate his message to the World and all the viewers watching the show Worldwide. His message was Peace and Unity to all mankind, and to stop the fighting. We will be running a special tribute to Joseph at this year's Monterey Bay Reggae festival...see www.mbayreggaefest.net including footage from his past performances at the festival. Another soilder passes and another one is born. Much love to all the family and friends of Joseph Hill. My sincerest condolences.

CULTURE Joseph Hill, known to family and friends as Lloydie, of the roots reggae group Culture, has passed away. He was on tour in Europe (Germany) when he became ill. The group came to prominence in the seventies with hits such as 'Two Sevens Clash' a song in tribute to some of the prophetic sayings of Marcus Mosias Garvey, and the year 1977. For every traveler on the Mandela Highway, I am sure they will remember the cotton tree outside the Ferry police station on the Saint Catherine and Saint Andrew border. Culture the group, with Joseph as its lead cornerstone singer, gave us numerous songs that addressed the injustices and dissatisfaction of the Jamaican, and world population. His songs were also anthems for the beliefs of Rastas all over the world. He was not afraid to sing about the greediness of a woman always wanting money on Friday, but not doing much for the rest of the week. 'Baldhead Bridge' referred to the wicked and foolish system of the 'baldhead' and the way in which it would all come to an end. 'Natty Never Get Weary' is one of those songs that speaks to the perseverance of the Rasta man in spite of how others treat him. The seventies saw the group producing some of their most memorable and much loved songs. Their timeless classics has survived for more three decades, cultivating new listeners and lovers of the music. Culture was one of those groups that played an important part in the musical landscape of the seventies, and the Rasta movement in particular. No record collection or party would be complete without a segment from the group. The reggae music community is in mourning, but the songs and his music will continue to live and so will the memory of Joseph Hill. To the Hill family, Pauline his wife, his children and other family members, let the love from all of the lovers of Culture's music give you all the strength to carry on and just remember that Natty Never Get Weary. My heart is heavey with the loss of Papa Culture. Joseph Hill was a unique singer/ performer/ song writer who could conect with his audience like no other. He wrote everything from the most hard core dreadfully crucial concious lyrics to love songs and humorous diddy's. My native american elders have taught me that sometimes the best medicine is humor. Joseph was always able to laugh with us and cry with us. I am honored to have met Mr. Hill and to have performed on the same bill several times in my life, including one of his birthday shows in Hopiland. On behalf of my family, Stumpa & Gathered Nation, 8750 Reggae Band, Stumpfilms and Highest Region. We pray that JAH eases Joseph's transition to ZION and comforts his family and friends in these difficult times. Also... a note Albert-- You have always carried the Culture vibe and you hold a special place in our hearts. Be strong and wise. Thank you for you works and may Jah bless you in these times of mourning. Peace and Unity Long Live Joseph Hill and Culture Geoff "Stumpa" Stump

An anonymous quote runs "We come, we go, in between we leave a mark". Joseph Hill and Mighty Culture in general has left deep indelible mark among roots reggae fans in this part of the world. We join his family in celebrating the life of a man who thought to bring the Black Starliner to pick all the slaves. Though physically dead, Rasta Joseph Hill will always live with us spiritually. When Dennis Brown died, Hill Sang "When the tree falls". Now that he has left us, I humbly say "The King of the Jungle has fallen". Hill was the King who desired to see end to neo-colonialization and exploitation. We, the rasta community should strive to make sure that what Hill stood for is achieved completely. We loved Hill so much, but Almighty Jah loved him more. Rest in Peace Brother Hill, AMEN.

I have followed Brother Hill and Culture for the better part of my life. Brother Hill was more than a musician. He was in Sierra Leone in 1996,1998 and 2004. He brought with him something that was more than music,LOVE. He loved the Sierra Leone people, he identified with the poverty and misery people grappled with day in day out. Yesterday when I was at the Airport to pick my wife and Kid I met a colleague who happen to be the Immigration Officer who issued the Entry Visa to Brother on his last visit to this country. Among the many fond memories we shared about this fallen Brother was the opportunity to see Hill praying under the stage right in the middle of a concert at the National Stadium in Freetown. We were expecting him in Sierra Leone this coming December.

HALLELUJAH! Zion gates have welcomed you in! Glory and honour be to the Most High. Glory be to Jah for that. What a life. But Jah knows and Jah has rewarded. HALLELUJAH! It is with deep sorrow and grief. I don't know what reggae music will be without the energetic Joseph Hill, of whom I considered to be the most inspiring only second to the king Bob Marley. Especially in the song he composed himself "WHERE THE TREE FALLS" in which he said as long as Joseph Hill is alive Reggae Music is alive. It will take time to see such a rootsman again in the reggae world. May his soul rest in peace. Oh Lord Almighty Jah Rastafarians!!!...King of Kings and Lord of Lords...This man Joseph Hill was in the true image of the Father. It really is such a great loss for the world to lose our African teacher, but then again, let Jah will be done. Hill WAS AND STILL is a man who stands for the truth. His educating lyrics, conscious message, positive vibes really bring out Hill as a true humble African.

Freetown, Sierra Leone - Thursday, August 24, 2006 at 06:37:14 (EDT)

Joseph Hill was a prophet whose teaching was based on the promotion of peace and love among the people of the world. The message in his songs is full of inspiration and guidance not only for our generation, but for generations yet unborn. He was highly opposed to conflicts especially those that involved the use of fire arms and state of the earth bombs against Jah's creation. He considered the idea of people fighting against each other as a very shamefull act, and he clearly emphasised this in his sound track titled 'Stop The Fusing And Fighting'. His melodeous voice will constantly re-eco in our ears till the end of times. To Pauline Hill, Kenyatta Hill, members of the Culture Band and fans Worldwide, the crying should stop. Joseph is gone to occupy his rihgtful place alongside Bob and Peter in Jah's kingdom. He is gone but shall never be forgotten. MAY HIS SOLE REST IN PERFECT PEACE.

Absolutely stunned to hear about the loss of Joseph. I have many many songs in my collection but Culture stand head and shoulders above all other artists in my opinion. So many great songs, so many brilliant rhythmns, so many great lyrics. I have had the priviledge of seeing him performn live and what a fantastic showman he was. He will be sorely missed. The world has lost a musical genius but his music will live on forever. Rest in Peace but kick up a riddim in heaven.

I feel very blessed to have witnessed Joseph and Culture many times perform live all over California. He was a very humble Lion who carried the torch with great pride throughout the world singing of peace, love & guidance wherever he went. The first show I ever DeeJayed for was Culture and I remember him traveling in my buddies car to a record store to sign autographs. He told stories of Jamaica and his early days in the music buisness. What a treat I will always cheerish. I also had the pleasure of meeting his partner in life, Pauline, my prayers are with you. The news of Joseph Hill's passing has come as a great shock. Since May 2006 my music listening has been strictly of this great man, Culture. Like the legendary Bob Marley, Culture's music concerning the poor, the downtrodden and the injustices of man against his brother is a testament of Mr Hill being truly his "brother's keeper" and a brave, vocal "watchman" who will be tremendously missed. Below is an excerpt of an interview, I(Jah Breeze) conducted with Joseph Hill on June 25th, 2006 at SNWMF in Booneville, California where I served as the press moderator. JB:> Your name........CULTURE JH:> Yes...Sir JB:> How did that come about, Joseph Hill....becoming CULTURE JH:> Maybe because....Maybe that is one of the reasons why I don't love money, because I have already earned my name. So I don't need to earn money, or I don't need to be a great lover of the earning of money. Now the way I see my name is like.....uhm...first we went to the Studio and when we delivered our first rendition....uhm...Everybody....Nobody ask us what was our name at first. They said, "Ah wha we fah call dem deh man yah".(laughs) So I made no reply, because I am just you know....I really see it easier to be silent and learn, rather to make a noise....a great noise and being a 'DOUNCE'. So I listened, and then I heard the whole congregation as the size it was at the time, said, "Call dem CULTURE!!!!" I just heard about the great Joseph Hill's death not too long ago, and I am deeply devastated. This is a big loss to the reggae world and to us as fans. I felt like I knew him personally through his music and concious message. He was a very gifted, talented, wise and humble man...A comparison parallel to that of the late Bob Marley. You did a good job on earth joe hills, now go home to jah and rest. Thanks for enriching our lives with your positive messages through your music. We miss you dearly. You were a true legend,a positive Icon. May your soul rest in perfect peace!. My deepest sympathy to his family, band mates and friends. SO LET US REJOICE FOR THE TEACHINGS HE BROUGHT US AND THE WORKS HE ACCOMPLISHED, FOR HE HAS JOINED WITH THE ALMIGHTY WHO IS WITHOUT FATHER OR MOTHER YET FATHER AND MOTHER THE ONENESS OF PURITY AND LOVE. jht

Joseph Hill & Culture As we ponder the great loss of Joseph Hill we reflect on his many works. Going back to the foundation of reggae music, Joseph brought forward a sound vibe that still echoes in my brain. As a top-notch vocalist, song writer, and human I'll never forget Josephs influence on me as a reggae listening youth. "Psalm of Bob Marley" brought a tear to my eye, now we need a "Psalm of Joseph Hill." With his straight forward lyrical statements he left no doubt about his meaning, now we need more straight shooters like him. His admonitions in "Youth Man Move" moved you to dance, moved you to take control of your destiny. In "Work On Natty" he stresses the importance of hard work, of being diligent in the face of poverty. I ask Joseph "Tell Me Where You Get It?" Now I ask the world to "Stop The Fussing and Fighting," and to "Let Love Shine Bright." Now I see Joseph ascending to "Holy Mount Zion," but his fans will keep "Chanting On" for I-ver more. "Peace and Love," Jesse "Chanting On" Feel like chanting on, I'm in the spirit Feel like chanting on, I'm in the mood (repeat) When I look up in the mountain And see all the things When I check up on the lightning And even the thunder too Feel like chanting on, I'm in the spirit Feel like chanting on, I'm in the mood (repeat) In my home there is an ants nest And I check the way they live And they live so much united That human its a shame Feel like chanting on, I'm in the spirit Feel like chanting on, I'm in the mood (repeat) When I check up on the children Every morning walk to school About war and fuss they're innocent They depend on us for love It makes me.... Feel like chanting on, I'm in the spirit Feel like chanting on, I'm in the mood (repeat) When I check up on the prisoners See how rough they live And I check up on the birds dem And even their strange song to sing It makes me.... Feel like chanting on, I'm in the spirit Feel like chanting on, I'm in the mood (repeat) When I check up on the crocodile How rough his skin look And sometime between them there is loving So why cant we love one another too? It makes me.... Feel like chanting on, I'm in the spirit Feel like chanting on, I'm in the mood (repeat)

"A slice of Mt. ZION is for I"... Blessed Love Mr. Hill, give many, many, thanks for the Spiritual as well as Life guidance that thee I has given to I throughout the course of I life!! I KNOW that their was no other Rastaman/Reggae artist that was as Humble or as Righteous a man as was Joseph Hill...no matter the crowd or the size of the venue, Joseph Hill always "spoke" directly to every individual in the audience! I loved the Life lessons that he would teach inbetween songs, they often forced chills down InI spine. As much I as I mourn the loss of this Great man...I MUST give thanks for being able to see him bless the stage so many wonderful times!! JAH LOVE FORIVERMORE Bless Ras Justin Matthew

Yes Joseph Hill you sang "You dont wanna be left out of ZION GATE" because "Jah alone can give you satisfaction".Joseph mi big breddah, wha happn?why so soon? mi inna schock an'cry out inna mi heart. First time I heard your voice I was in Tanzania(Africa). The song "Behold" which has the line that says"...and I know it was a voice, the voice of the Most High, saying behold, behold,I come quickly" forced me to look at his Imperial majesty with a different attitude.Saw you for the first time in 1991 at ROCKHAUS in Vienna and I saw you everytime Culture came to Austria. As I write these lines the song"Down in Jamaica" plays on,and something tells me I should stop here.JAH BLESS YOU BIG BROTHER;WE ARE ALL IN THE SAME BOAT.ONE BRIGHT MORNING WHEN OUR WORK IS OVER WE GONNA FLY AWAY HOME TO ZION AND HOPE TO SEE YOU JOSEPH!! Sincere condolences to Mrs Hill and Children.Blessed.

Diego Larrique, Caracas/vzla

The passion the sincerty!,when I first heard 2 7s clash back in 1977 as a punk rocker in London in 1977 it left a deep and lasting impression on me which was never to leave me.Music comes and music goes, but Culture`s music has stayed in my heart all this time because it`s more than music to me, it`s a lesson in how to love, when there is so much hatred in the world.Jah bless you Joseph for all your works and for all the goodness youv`e instilled in me.

I just want to wish the family of Mr. Joseph Hill God's peace in this their trying time. I have come to love the music produced by Culture. Whenever, I'm down, I could always pick up a Cd and by the time it's done playing, my mood would be set right again. I do hope that Mr. Hill soul will rest in eternal peace.

My heart is heavy with the sad news that Joseph Hill has passed on through the gates. Culture was the first reggae show I was blessed to attend eight years ago in NYC. I was hooked ever since. Mr. Hill always looked like he was thoroughly enjoying himself when performing. I pray that he rest in peace on Hola Mt. Zion and that he may overstand what a significant and lasting impression he has made on so many of us across this globe. Thank you for sharing your talent and your positive words with us. Blessings to the Hill family, reggae music has lost one of its greatest masters.
