LOVE & RESPECT SHOWN JOSEPH HILL IS A TESTAMENT TO HIS LIFE
AND WORKS We needed you and your music but the Lord needed you more. your music will always be an inspiration. RIP! Mulumba joshua <anamjam@yahoo.com> Nairobi, Kenya - Tuesday, August 22, 2006 at 23:56:59 (EDT) I have always been a great admirer of Joseph Hill/Culture for many years. I know that i am not the only Kenyan who feel the loss of one of reggae's great icons. Indeed he paid tribute to his Kenyan fans with two visits; i was one of the thousands upon thousands who thronged his shows there. Having been brought uo in the ghettos his conscious lyrics were and will forever be uplifting. R.I.P Joseph Hill. One of your Kenyan fans. willis okech <wokech@yahoo.com> Oxford, OH U.S.A - Tuesday, August 22, 2006 at 23:36:35 (EDT) We shall miss you but jah is with you.Your music will keep us in you. ERIC NEW YORK, NY U.S. - Tuesday, August 22, 2006 at 23:20:31 (EDT) Peace and perfect peace! Joe, you were a great source of inspiration for the oppresed people of the world. Fare thee well my friend and my brother!! Kojo <joojo42yahoo.com> Minneapolis, MN US - Tuesday, August 22, 2006 at 23:09:39 (EDT) My prayers unto the Father in Jesus name go out to the family of Joseph Hill. I have really enjoyed listening the earthy, rootsy, heartical voice which has been preserved on so many recordings. The album "Baldhead Bridge" is a particular favourite going back to my earliest years of tuning into the sounds and vibes of conscious reggae. I appreciate very much the contribution of Joseph Hill to reggae music and music in general. We never know when our time here is up- each day, each moment is crucial though we often fail to realize it. I do hope Joseph was one who was in Christ and therefore will enjoy boundless joy and peace of everlasting life. What else could I possibly wish in this time? Shalom, Mike Mike Roots <mroots@optonline.net> Torrington, CT USA - Tuesday, August 22, 2006 at 23:01:42 (EDT) On behalf of all Ugandan roots reggae fans I would like to say THANK YOU for your life Joseph, for showing all those good for nothing politicians what they could never be, A MAN WITH DIGNITY, RASTAFARI.... With every lyric, every public appearance and in the life you lived, you challenged us to be our very best at all times. Rest in eternal peace RASTA, you did with your little finger what the vast many could not do with all their limbs. Yours truly, Roots reggae fan in mourning and blessed to have known you. Kimbo <unclepat4@yahoo.com> Columbus, oh USA - Tuesday, August 22, 2006 at 22:59:09 (EDT) Deep blessings and condolensces to the Hill Music Family. The music and perpetually conscious lyrics of Culture uplifted my body/spirit like no other on earth. I owe many thanks and praises for all of the positive spiritual inspiration that Joseph Hill and Culture has instilled deeply into the roots of my soul. Immediately after my first exposure to the Music of Culture I was drawn to their rythyms and bright wise words like a fish is drawn to water. Joseph Hill's music kept and will continue to keep me focused on a highly positive spiritual level. I had the pleasure of meeting Joseph backstage at the Belly-up in Solana Beach after a show with Israel Vibartions. We shared a spliff. He personified humbleness, wisdom, and youth to me. No one had or has moves like Joseph skanking. The many cherished memories of Joseph dancing will always be bright shinning stars in my brain. Now Joseph Hill rests peacefully but his spirit is within millions upon millions of us. For all he taught, all he preached, and all of the positive love he spread all over this planet I will be eternally grateful for. When I go I pray that Joseph Hill is the third entity to greet and welcome me after JAH and my dad. If I can assist the Musical Family Of Culture in any way, shape or form please do not hesitate to reach out to me. Much Much Respect and even more LOVE goes out to all of you!!!!! Vadim Vadim Bozhor <Whodozhnik@cox.net> Santee, CA United States - Tuesday, August 22, 2006 at 22:57:56 (EDT) When I first heard culture's music, the song was 'Holy Mt. Zion', with Sly & Robbie & the Revolutionaries it sound like someone in a half-sleep state casting a powerful unstoppable magical and musical spell. As an aspiring songwriter, I was fascinated by that approach & I was forever hooked. Joseph hill & Culture are heroes to me because they championed that deep innovative spiritual roots reggae music that comes like a spiritual healing tonic whenever u hear it. I feel blessed by their wonderful musical works and the message in the music. I am an artist within reggae because of the works of the Wailers, Culture, the early Third World band & Steel Pulse and people behind the music like Karl Pitterson & Lee Scratch Perry and etc. To all Rasta & Reggae Ambassadors, lets continue the works. Blessings to the Families & Loved Ones of Joseph Hill & Culture! Dean Brown & The Dub Shak Band <alexanderdean@yahoo.com> Macon, GA USA - Tuesday, August 22, 2006 at 22:33:24 (EDT) You will be remembered for your music and humanity. His music has brought me through many difficult days and at times inspirred me to keep onenabled speaking out for those who could not do so for themselves. It has been an honor to know the songs. Thank you Mr. Hill for a gift that has touched the lives of many many of us. You will be greatly missed, and were dearly loved in many hearts. How very strange that only this afternoon i saw the rest of the band members passing through Dublin (IRELAND)Airport on my way back to the uk. I shook the hand of one of the trio, the younger of the two not realising what had happened, with being on a break in Ireland. I had planned to see the group on sunday 27th at the jazz and roots club Shrewsbury England, so i logged on to see other tour dates only to find out that a true individual master had now left us at a time in the world where the concious and inspirational lyrics are so very much needed. Bless Joseph jah RASTAFARI!!!!! Hold tight and be strong to all the family and band members, Keep the muic coming. Atlanta and The Metroplex give their respects to the family and all those who love him. Paul Cornwell <pablo@worldcamp.org> Atlanta, Ga USA - Tuesday, August 22, 2006 at 19:15:49 (EDT) Joe, To me and to many reggae fans and rastafarians, Culture has represented the authentic African philosophy and traditions to the world. Culture educate people that values like human dignity and integrity are basics for respecting life AND it is the only way to stop the modern ways of conscious barbaric cheating and destruction of human life! That's why Culture was honored with several awards and was in 1987 in Israel peace concert among the Palestinians and the Israelites. Joseph Hill is a true legend, intelligent and genuine African messenger who upheld traditional values of a simple, open man as can be lived in his lyrical vibes. May Jah bless the Hill family and Culture as the band continue their European tour. May He give Kenyatta Hill (son) the strength and power to pay tribute to his father as a representative in the band! USA - Tuesday, August 22, 2006 at 18:52:20 (EDT) ........it is with many tears in my eyes that, a moment ago, I stopped and thought to myself.... don't cry. Deceased, but not gone, is a truly passionate and wise dread that influenced you. He, along with a few other prophets, delivered you from the root of ignorance to the foot of humility... through which truth came. Here is a dread that has opened the eyes of many millions of people, and I hope his family knows that. Here is a man of the highest power, that has been for years doing the work of Jah, God, Allah, Yahweh.... the work of peace and truth, liberty and honesty. Kenyatta, I remember you from a show here in Richmond, when I saw you bouncing around in the booth area where the board was.... a great inspiration as well, I could tell so easily (lol) that you truly loved your father, and his music, and I simply cannot wait to see you onstage fulfilling his music with a nice calm and distinctly wise message. I said "Man, we need a soundman like THAT!"... then they told me who you are. Thank you for just giving it your best shot, and feel like the shoes are yours to walk in for a bit. A beautiful man, and a fantastic human being, ras, we will miss you. When I get weak, I turn on culture... hear the prophet sing, and the birds sing like "tweet-tweetie-di-tweet!" Joseph Hill was one of the most beautiful reggae singers I've ever heard and the harmonies he made with Culture was second to none. I am sure his music will live on in the hearts of thousands of people that he touched around the world including little Victoria BC/Vancouver Island where he was enjoyed countless times by our community. We will do our part to contribute to this happenning by continuing to play his music on our local radio stations and making the youth aware of his music that inspired so many of the bands they enjoy today. The message and music of Culture will continue to be strong even in his death. Thousands will see to that. That’s a sample of his teachings that he brought through his Crucial Roots and Culture style. Without a doubt a “True Humble African. Mr. J. Hill truly inspired me in many ways, especially in the way that we should live and treat our Brethrens and our sistrens. I was fortunate to be “ live and direct” to meet the Rasta man himself with may Brethrens in Long Beach. When we meet he was just as humble as his lyrics always said. When I heard the dreadful news that Mr. J. Hill has passed on, I could not believe it because I was waiting for him to come back to the USA for tours. I've always said true love transends even the music. This is evidenced by the returned love of his adoring fans. If he did not live it, we all could not truly feel it! He was strong yet gentle, Passionate and funny. I feel blessed to have been able to grace the stage with him and greet him personally over the years. I've always said he had the best live energy on any stage at anytime than anyone else I've ever met in reggae. His shows, though fast paced, left no room for question as to his message. I want his family, and other band members, to know I stand with you through this loss. However it's only a brief loss to us here. He is blessed and the gates of zion are preparing for his arrival. Question to the rest of us here is.... Are we following his example that one day we too can enter zion and meet him again. Let's tighten our bootstraps in these crucial times and share more love. Mrs P. we met in North Hampton's Iron Horse two years ago in the dressing room basement and had a cordial conversation about the man on stage. He came down a while later and he spoke to the small group of adoring fans. His kindness was evident and he joked quite a bit. I realized then he was a humble child in a grown man's body! Please accept my sympathy in this sad time. Just remember he did not die he has gone through the TRANSITION! The spiritual, happy and content feeling the trio provided never changed while your stories, lyrics and music did throughout the years. From Red Rocks to Boston to Woodbury, Joseph’s kindness and happiness shined through to my friends, family and everyone we have met at Culture shows throughout the years. If an opening act could not perform, Joseph would stand up and play two sets. I remember waking up at a reggae festival campsite on top of a mountain, going for a hike and hearing Joseph warming up early in the day. His laugh echoing through the air ! But he does not leave this contaminated-world without fruits, as he was very productive and prosperous in transmitting and sharing the conscious, uplifting vibration of JAH Rastafari and black ROOTS & CULTURE. He surely had a big impact on the souls of thousands and thousands of African and African descendants in the diaspora and on the continent, who are seeking for reparation and salvation. He perfectly performed the heavenly works of the Father by sending out the message to the sheeps and even increasing his talents to give more and more to the poor and needy ! Among all the artist Joseph Hill was very very very special to me, because his voice in the music could release the electronic energy that is pent-up in the biomolecules of my body, so that my spirit was awakened and excited. I even at times get tears in my eyes and I could feel my soul sparking, when I listen to his music; it is just overwhelming. BUT : Mi nah fret too much for this brethren, as I have the faith that his soul is in the safe realm of the FATHER, JAHWE El Shaddai. Your hit '' RALLY ROUND JEHOVAH'S THRONE'' changed my life to believe more in God in the 80's,when trodding down Babylon in Nigeria. I always pray to meet you one day, as a journalist, and like a miracle you appeared at Pole-pole festival in Antwerp, the 2004 and gave me an interview I will never forget until he day I will meet you in Jah's kindom. ''Face to face with the great Joseph Hill of Culture'' is now a masterpiece at ''Blogcritics.org''site. I watched you performimg at Petrol in Antwerp on 18 Agust 2006, ready to present to you a porcelain art work, on behalf of the West African community in Antwerp, for your hard works and achievements as superstar in music, but your illness prevented me. However, Mr Telford Nelson received it on your behalf. I came home saturday morning playing your music and dancing. In town, the same morning I heard of your death. Mr HILL you have hurt me so much, but it's only God who understands. May your soul rest in perfect peace. I was really looking forward to the trip. My husband, Ras Eitiko "TKU" Tafari or Albert Barnes toured with you in the early 1980s, in both your US and European tours. It was after one of the tours with you that he eventually settled in England. I am from Zimbabwe, and I rememebr hearing your music playing on the Zimbabwean radio station everyday and nearly everyone, including rural folks, would just rise up and dance even if a lot of people did not understand the lyrics. I have a collection of nearly all your music. Jah will take care of you, man, and your legacy will live forever to many generations to pass. I always thought about that, and this momment spurred me on to use my education to uplift along with music. I will never forget that silent momment, it was as if he was tacitly coaxing my subconscious mind to use the oppurtunity that I had aquired through education for the benefit of the masses---and in the same instant came a subtle, silent, yet stern admonition not to neglect that which so many strive for, yet never get the privelege to attain. I got to know Joe and Miss P through my friend, George Michailow, who is their agent. Joe was a remarkable man, friendly and kind and just a very nice person, a true example of the meaning of Culture. Despite his international fame as a Reggae Artist, he remained a humble Jamaican who was very appreciative of his God given gifts and of the awards and acclaims he received, not taking them for granted. After many years absence from Jamaica I returned for a visit over the past New Year and was fortunate to be there to see Joe perform in the Foundation Music Showcase concert in Kingston on Jan. 7th, 2006. The concert went on way past the scheduled time and it was well after 3 am when Joe hit the stage, the second to last artist to perform.
