His heart was pure, his manner humble and simple, his words profound, his message clear and true, his music uplifting, and his life/lifestyle should be a role model to anyone and everyone on how to live in this mess of a world and be honest, kind, and GIVE LOVE when so much hate abounds... The world, not just the reggae community, has truly lost one of the greats, and we have only to be thankful that he was with us for a time, and know that we are left with beautiful memories, and music that will live forever, while he is truly in a better place.. My deepest condolences to Pauline, Kenyatta (who has always been so kind to me as well),the rest of the family, and of course the band...what an honor you've had to work with this man all these years!! May Jah Bless, Guide, and Comfort you now and always.. with deepest thoughts of sympathy and love, Kurt Mahoney. Kurt Mahoney <chereokeeradiopeace@yahoo.com> Laguna Beach, Ca. USA - Monday, August 21, 2006 at 22:44:13 (EDT) Heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of Joseph 'Culture" Hill. May his soul Rest In Peace. On July 1, 2006 Culture performed in Tortola, British Virgin Islands. It rained heavily and got off to a late start: He prayed for the rain to cease even but for the people to hear what he had to say. We heard him for the last time. In the song "Where the tree falls" on his Pay Day Album, he puts it this way: "so long as bitter belly Joseph Hill is alive reggae music is alive". Well, as he 'waits until judgment takes its course', his music will live on in our hearts. Hold tight Kenyatta. Hold tight! RAS LION SIMEON <dreadyno1@hotmail.com> BRIDGETOWN, BARBADOS - Monday, August 21, 2006 at 21:58:25 (EDT) Thanks to Conscious Party for making it possible for all of us to express our deep love for Joseph Hill, and our condolences to his family and bandmembers. In May Culture performed in one of Joseph's favorite venues, a little shoreside club in Rhode Island. For some reason I was driven to be right at the edge of the stage, and stood there waiting and waiting for the show to start. I was rewarded by being at his feet, only a matter of inches away. I was saturated by his love and message and music and now I know, for the last time. Sai Baba devotees joined together world-wide to pray for peace with yearning hearts during the period from August 9th until August 20th, When I heard that Joseph went to Jah after the performance in Berlin, I felt the deep loss, yet at the same time, the absolute joy of knowing that the greatest peacemaker on our planet was taken to Jah's embrace. I am overwhelmed with emotion and love for this man who gave body, heart and soul to promoting peace on earth and so very happy to read what each person has said here in his honor. May his loving wisdom continue to spread through the world on a daily basis through our embrace of his message, and of each other. It was a moment of zen hanging with Joseph, a legend of the reggae world, the reggae world will surely miss him and we shall all rejoice in his memory of being a great performer, father, and spiritual adviser to the world of music. Even though we will no longer interact with him physically, his legacy will continue to sustain us. May the Most High bless his soul. Joseph died a fighter and he is in the same class as other great fighters such as Garvey, Malcolm X and Bob Marley. His work on earth is over and he is now the keeper of Zion Gates. "I don't wanna be left out of Zion Gates... I need Jah near me." Yes Joseph is now near Jah in real time! Both times Joseph always came off as a very nice person, very personable. My deepest condolences go out to his family and friends. I couldn't always understand every word but what I could understand made a difference to me. There isn't much stronger statement about having an impact in the world and Mr. Joseph Hill has certainly accomplished 'making a difference' in that he has inspired people around the world. I saw him live with an average size crowd in Chapel Hill and he made a true effort to engage with the crowd. He leaves the world a better place and I thank him for that and wish his family condolences. peace and god bless, Tim Tim Brooks <tbrooks7@mindspring.com> Durham, NC USA - Monday, August 21, 2006 at 20:43:26 (EDT) joseph just saw you the other day (in eindhoven....) and our joy was so full... i never knew it was the last time allthough i felt a very special vibe..different from all the other many times me meet and precious momments we spend ...your energy was so tremendous and powerfull channel 7 was going good ..sounding heavy! and the world dont know you was a even better mc& selecter (one man soundsysthem) than singer...jah know....i must laugh now when i remember the power and briliance you had to even entertain 3 hand full of domino players in manning hill...... never knew we was going to write history this way.....with raw truth being the last song you ever wrote and recorded..we will have to continue jah works ... may it be that special gift you give to us ... this special tune you gave to prepare a table for i and i (the family) in the presence of i and i enemies..... but you anointed our heads with oil....our cups runneth over... every day minute second i spend with you was inspiration to i and i ... bun all pirates merchants and killers and parasites who want to come take a bite.... all brothers and sisters..people in the world who love and respect joseph hill and his majestic works.....please suport the family HILL and BUY the original TRACK / CD 7 " when it comes out..very soon... for now you can listen it 24 / 7 until release date...please dont down load...no final mix . check www.ababajanhoy.com..............(brother bengee´s site ) TO ALL FAMILY AND FRIENDS SISTER P YATTA (now your the man in the house!) Reggae music has lost a great ambassador of our culture. I met Mr. Joseph Hill on June 20th, 2004. When my band Awakening opened for Culture at the Downtown in Farmingdale, New York. We were fortunate to be there as were so many others. I was introduced to music of Culture by my good friend and founding member of Awakening, Rudy Ibrahim. Rudy brought me CD’s of Culture music and right away I was inspired. The music was played by living musicians, not heard much on a Reggae album today. The sound had that old school feel. Rich and progressive for it’s time, vibrant and awake. Culture projected what so many reggae acts have lost. A true feel of reggae music. I was fortunate to stand on the same stage as Mr. Hill. It was also a pleasure to be able to bring my good friend Rudy to meet, play, sing and enjoy a memory we will never have again. May you rest in peace Mr. Hill, your music touched us all. He tried and he tried and will keep right on trying from the realm of ancestral singers and players to bring back the money with the sign of the lion and free the international herb. He warned all those who would try the impossible task of studying Rastafari thaty they can't study I. Rastafari is a livity. This remarkable event, now in its 11th year, attracts premier league reggae artists such as Sizzla and Anthony B but the primary reason for going this year was to see Culture, led by Joseph Hill. I have lost count of the number of times I have seen Joseph perform and every show is a triumph. As ever, Joseph delivered a storming set, this time in a crisp purple suit, but none of us realised this was the last time we would see him perform live. The man was a poet and a source of inspiration for decades from 'Two 7s Clash' and 'Stop that Fussing and Fighting' through to 'When the Tree Falls'. The world will never be the same again - play the song "Jah Rastafari" over and over in Joseph's memory. Others will, no doubt, have more to say Thank you Joseph for everything you gave us all. Open wide ZION GATES and enter in Mr. Hill. It's hard to put into words what Joseph Hill was to the world and reggae music. When you talk of Roots Reggae, he was it, a true rastaman. This is truely a tremendous big loss to the world and reggae music and i'm very sad to hear of his passing. I feel very blessed to have met the man at a festival in Long Beach,CA a few years ago. I was with my brother and cousin when we approached him. He welcomed us with a big smile like an old friend and we chatted a bit about his then new album "World Peace". It was one of the greatest moments in my life if not the best because i've admired this man and his music for many years. No one wrote music and performed on stage like Joseph Hill, he was a wonderful character to watch absolutely the best. Though his flesh has left us, his music will remain with us forever and we'll never forget you Mr. Culture. My prayers go out to him and his family and those close to him. However, One of the greatest honors bestowed upon me in this life was the opportunity to open for Culture (as the rhythm guitarist and lead singer of the Awakening), at the Downtown in Farmingdale. L.I. New York, during the summer of 2004. Now, the video, cd, pictures and the memories will take on a new meaning for me. He has been a great inspirator for many,"A Humble African",a liberator and a true Rastaman. Mother Earth gave us a son, who came and did his work well in establishing righteous music all over the world, touching the hearts and lives of many. We had the privilege of sharing the stage with Culture, and it was one of the greatest honor, to the point where we had expressed doing a collaboration with him. Joseph Hill's positive vibration as a person is admirable, and as his life and works continue to heal and inspire, we pray that his Soul rest in Perfect Peace. He "Never gave up the fight", and right now, Culture "has not been left out of Zion Gate". He will always be loved and remembered. I only saw him on stage twice but felt I knew him like a best friend. The first time I saw him he was mingling with the crowd before the show. When he saw me looking in his direction he just flashed a big smile. Such a genuine guy. Forget Burning Spear, Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown or any of the other reggae icons of the last 30 years, Joseph was head and shoulders above them all. Not just a prodigious and prolific songwriter but a consummate performer. I'm listening to Two Sevens Clash, without any shadow of a doubt the most important, influential and essential roots album ever recorded in the whole history of Jamaican music. I have been absorbing and collecting the music going back some 50 years and out of all that I have, this album is still the one Iwould keep with me if I had only one choice. I'm just totally numb. A big piece of Reggae music has died tonight. Truly a legend. If reggae music is a cake, then it feels like a quarter of it is now gone. The man was a very special and unique talent. Don't take my word for it. Just listen to any of hiis music and dare to say you don't feel upliftment of spirit. Many is the time when I've felt despondent and deeply depressed and beset by problems, I've turned to Culture for inspiration and ALWAYS felt enlivened and enriched by the positive vibes giving me the strength to face the world with confidence. Just listen to Jah Pretty Face and, if you have a heart and soul, you'll know true peace and fulfilment..... It's what taught me that music can be heard as well as felt. I lived in Africa for 10 years, as my parents worked for UNICEF, and while in Rwanda (before the genocide), we lived in the Mille Colline Hotel (made infamous in the film "Hotel Rwanda") while my mother looked for a house to live in. I gave a mix tape of Culture favorites, as well as BMW and the Itals, to the front desk, and they played it on a loop for as long as we were there. It was a blast to hear it in the front lobby, piped into the hotel rooms, and in the restaurant. While in Ethiopia during the famine, I visited a Rasta reservation, again leaving tapes of Culture with the kind men, women and children I met there. Being able to shuffle and skank with them, listening to "Trod On", was a joy, something I will never forget. His family should know how much joy he brang to people all over the world. I know Joseph is in a peacful place now, feeling the throb of the Nyabhingi drum that is part of us all. Let us hope he will bring this world some peace as well. All my best to you, Joseph. Joseph Hill speaks about slavery in his music, he speaks about colonialism, he talks about modern-day corrupt politicians, he broaches and touches on every topic, povery, racism, religion, culture, war everything you can think of. listening to Joseph Hill is like researching deeply in the archives. the important thing and the difference is the deep spiritual dimension he brings to his music and always the connection that he constantly drew between the Caribbean New World, Jamaica and Africa. he breaks the barriers of mis-information, preaching love and unity all the time even as he teaches us to fight and not to tolerate nonsense. his is the most conscious roots reggae music of today and for me personally Mr Joseph Hill was as big as the legendary Bob Marley. in my mind Mr Joseph Hill is the King of Roots Reggae. With *World Peace* he and his crew took reggae music to the Highest possible sublime level. i can go on and on, but i'll leave it for now and juss sing: The brother Joseph Hill Hill Hill yes, the brother Joseph He Died and He died for a Righteous Cause Brother Joseph Hill, King of Roots Reggae music I say he died and he died for a righteous cause he died for reggae muscic, he speak the TRUTH and he died for a righteous cause the man died for reggae music King of Roots Reggae Music Man say he track the road the I n I may walk... My fondest memory is the speech he gave to the members of the Harambee Afrikan Cultural Organization at the Nebraska State Penetentiary in September 2000. He lifted the prisoners' spirits and they lifted his, which was reflected in an extraordinary performance later that night. The following year, when Hill visited my radio program, he dedicated "Capture Rasta" to the prisoners and lamented that he couldn't visit them on that trip. Reggae has lost an exceptional artist and will not be the same without him. --Carter Van Pelt Carter Van Pelt <cvanpelt@jalc.org> New York, NY USA - Monday, August 21, 2006 at 16:38:54 (EDT) One of Africa great sons has gone to the anscestors. Due to delays in travel and missing the start of their tour in California, they came straight from Jamaica to Taos, New Mexico. Mr. Hill's sympathy for the victims of the day was evident as was his conviction about were the real enemy lies. He used his words, his voice and energy to bring a calmness to the confusion of the aftermath but also to clarify how the inequalities of our world are creating desperation. He said he was going to do a "special show" for us as the people needed to heal and, at 7000 feet above sea level, the band tore it up for almost three hours invigorating everyone to strive for peace, love and justice. I will never forget his reasoning outside the venue with a gathering of fans trying to make sense of the world. His presence, faith and guidance was a comfort to all. juanlove <johnthenderson@hotmail.com> - Monday, August 21, 2006 at 16:17:00 (EDT) Big Joseph Hill, your Soul rest in Peace!!! It is a shame you were never exhaulted to the superstar status our 'so called' Reggae Artistes receive in the industry but in my eyes you were tops! Perhaps, one day those who have the power to make a change will and more like you and Joseph Higgs will get the recognition they deserve during their lifetime and not posthumously as has been happening. Well, you made me see 'love is brighter than the morning sun'. Thanks for your love and especially for keeping the music alive until your last day on Earth here with the human race. You tried your utmost to bring a new reasoning among many who were forgetting what is most important. You may be gone to jam with the others in Zion but your music and your delightfully loving spirit remains here in our hearts iternally. A true Jah Messenjah you were and real sacrifices you and your band members have made to make many more comfortable. The news came from Africa from a son whose heart mourns this loss and who shared many stories about the tours, the all night bus rides, and most of all, the privilege to work with Joseph. I pray for tender peace for Joseph's family and that Jah's Hand will rest on them as He opens His arms to welcome Joseph into eternal love and peace. Joseph and Culture were the first group I ever toured with, in 1980. When I first performed in Jamaica, at an Ethiopian Orthodox Church benefit in St. Catherine on which they were the headliners, they were warm and welcoming. We stayed in touch and they invited me to their house on Shortwood Road, where I met their families. I was supposed to leave Jamaica with them to go on tour; it didn't happen until I went home for Christmas that year. I went to see them at the Ritz with friends and went backstage to say hello. As soon as Joseph saw me, he said, "You are here! Wonderful! We have a next guitar for you." He would hear no objections! The next thing my friends saw was me playing onstage at the Ritz with Culture on a borrowed guitar with no rehearsal! I then went with them on the rest of the tour. After I went back to Jamaica, I joined Lloyd Parks and We The People, but would sit in with Culture whenever I got the chance. Joseph was a larger than life figure with an equally large talent, a great sense of humor and fun, a warm heart, and a real gift for words and theatrics on and off stage. I will always remember his characterization of the act he had to put on with the promoter to get paid after the gig as the "third encore." I feel honored to have known him and worked with him. My condolences go out to Pauline, Albert, Kenneth, and the rest of the Culture family past and present. His music will live as long as reggae does. I also have the amazing opportunity to attend his last perfomance in Jamaica, land of reggae music at the sucessful return of the Reggae Sunsplash in St. Ann. It was brilliant as ever.
